Tuning, is very important, proper care of your board is super necessary for the performance. The reason why a lot of people get discouraged with snowboarding is due to their equipment. A poor quality snowboard tune will make riding very difficult.
Often when renting equipment the Snowboard tunes are usually tuned for the wrong conditions or not tuned at all. The best idea is to learn how to do your own snowboard tunes or at least learn what a good tune should look like that way you can tell the difference between a good tune and a bad one.
Control is what you want when snowboarding and having the right edges and base will make that happen a lot easier.
Before you jump into tuning your board ask yourself a few questions... (well that's if you don't have a huge hole on the bottom or a blown edge)
How is your board working for you?
What are the problems you are having while riding?
When did you tune your board last?
There is a lot of terms and a few tools that you will need, the terms are easy and the tools are not too expensive. Check out the links below for a step by step guide to tuning your snowboard.
If you decide that tuning is not for you, after reading these pages you will know what you need and want before you head over to your local tune shop.
Is Snowboard Tune easy...YES!
Tuning a snowboard is actually a very simple and easy process. Once you know how it is done you can do most tunes at home with some simple and very cheap snowboard tuning tools.
We've been tuning professionally for years now, but before that we would tune our boards at home. You can turn just about any chair with arms into your work bench. Or if you have the space you can make your own snowboard tune racks. If you have ever ridden a snowboard that wasn't tuned than you know why it is so important to have it tuned. Learn snowboard tune and have the fastest board on the hill.
Starting with the most basic snowboard tune, waxing, if you don't have the right snowboard wax for the conditions of the snow you will not have too much fun. When it is really really cold out and the snow is super dry riding with the wrong wax will cause you to stick to the snow.
You can actually stand on your snowboard and then lift it up and you will have an inch layer of snow stuck to your base. If you don't have the right snowboard wax for spring type conditions you will be riding along and then all of a sudden it will seem like somebody put the brakes on.
It's like stop then go then stop then go and so on. It gets pretty annoying trust me. I've been lazy before and didn't change my wax the night before a really warm spring day and ended up having to put twice as much effort into it because I walked to the mountain took like 3 runs all of which were like stop and go and ended up having to walk back home, wax my snowboard and then walk back to the mountain.

Ok so Snowboard Waxing is easy, but what about sharpening your snowboard edges?
That can't be easy, is it?
Yes, sharpening your snowboard edges is super easy and is a very important step in the snowboard tune process.
There are a couple of different ways to do this. At a tune shop you can sharpen your edges using an edge sharpening machine. These machines spin a sandpaper like material at high speeds, high enough to remove the steel of your edges.
They are actually easy to use, but don't leave them in one place for too long other wise you will take a notch out of your edges. Sharpening your snowboard edges with a machine is done with the same long smooth strokes as you would do if sharpening with snowboard tuning tools.
Snowboard tuning tools can be used for edge sharpening a couple different ways. The easiest way to do so is with the help of a snowboard file guide. The file guide allows you to change the angel of the edge depending on the conditions, all while ensuring you keep that desired edge.
Using a file guide will prevent any wrong edge angel being put on your board because the file locks into place. You could do it free hand with a file, but that is recommended for experienced tuners only.
It doesn't matter how you apply your edges it just matters that you have them. Riding around with no edges is not a good thing. Maybe if your into hitting rails or jibbing a lot you might desire less edges, but not no edges.
The whole point to snowboarding is making turns and without any edges you can't really make good turns because your edges are what grip into the snow and hold you during your turns.
