Checking Your Snowboard
Tools Needed for Checking Your Snowboard: True Bar & Base Cleaner
The first step in snowboard tune is checking the board all over. You need to know what is going on with the board so that you know what you need to fix during your snowboard tune. After you are done checking your snowboard you might have to take it to a tune shop, but that may be all you need to make your snowboarding 100% better.
Snowboard tune: Flatness of Base
Snowboards are suppose to be flat, but they never are because there is so much base. Even when they are brand new from the factory they are not perfectly flat. Boards can either be Convex (base high) or Concave (railed, edge high).
A Convex snowboard will feel slippery. It is really hard to get on your edges, like your edges won't hold. The faster you go the more it will wobble.
A Concave snowboard will feel like you can't make turns, like being on railroad tracks. Trying to turn your board takes a huge effort and will probably result in a wipe out.
To check your snowboard put it on a table and check the base with thetrue bar, they are called true bars due to their almost 100% straightness. Run the true bar from nose to tail. Usually under your feet is were the most unevenness will be.
After you figure out if your board is convex or concave you should take it to your tune shop and they can make your board (almost)flat with their machines.
This is a huge step into having a good snowboard tune. Also after your board is flat(or as flat as possible) you most likely can keep your board in top shape with some home tuning.
Snowboard Tune: Smooth Base
Boards work best when they have a smooth base that is why the next think you want to look for during this stage of a snowboard tune are gouges and deep scratches, along the edges and the base.
Some may be all the way through the base and exposing the core, if this is so you need to take your board to a tune shop, if the whole is not too big you will be able to fill the whole with base repair material and you will need a panzor file to shave the material flat.
Check out the link below for snowboard tuning tips on doing a base repair. If you have a really wide spreading whole you will need to restructure the board(to learn more about the structure of your board and why it will make all difference in the world I recommend checking out HOW TO TUNE A SNOWBOARD tune guide).
Snowboard Tune: Cleaning Base
The best way for checking your snowboard is check everything on your base by cleaning it with Base Cleaner. Take a rag and put some base cleaner on it and rub it all over the base of your board. If you don't have some base cleaner you can use some fresh squeezed citrus juice. If you discover that you do have gouges and scratches then you need to fill them with p-tex. Check out the link below to learn how to do a base repair.
Snowboard Tune: edges
Having sharp and clean looking edges are very important to a snowboard tune and to how much fun you have while riding. Check them for rust spots especially if you just pulled your snowboard out from storage. If you edges feel dull than you need to sharpen them with some hand tools. Check the link below for how to sharpen your edges and how to select the perfect edges for your riding conditions and style.
Performing a snowboard tune is very important to how much fun you have snowboarding. Checking your snowboard is just the first step in tuning. Make sure to check your snowboard as often as everyday to make sure nothing is being left unattended.
