Freeride Snowboarding
Freeride snowboarding is a snowboarding style. It is a whole different approach to snowboarding than freestyle. To me what determines your approach to snowboarding is your mind set.
I know that when I get into a freeride state of mind I am all about making my turns perfect. Linking my turns must be flawless. I ride more from my soul, like trying to be in tune with the mountain, not forcing anything. Freeriding is about going with what the mountain/terrain gives you. Unlike freestyle snowboarding where you seek tricks out, freeride is about going with the flow.
Freeride still consists of tricks, jumps, log slides... all kinds of things. Let me try to explain the difference in approaching a run with a freeride snowboarding state of mind. Imagine being at the top of a run. It is a pretty wide open run and no one is around.
To the right is a snow bank, a bit below that is a fallen tree and further below that is a jump. Now a freerider would see that bank and want to do a big turn on it, then do a straight 50/50 on the log or maybe just ollie over it and then hit the jump below with a straight air, no spinning, but maybe grabbing the board.
If you want to know how a freestyle rider would approach that same run click here.
The typical board used for freeride is a directional snowboard. That doesn't mean that you can't ride a twin tip snowboard and still go freeriding. It just means that directional boards are designed better for a freeriders approach to snowboarding style.
