Freestyle Snowboarding

Freestyle snowboarding is a snowboarding style. It is a whole different approach to snowboarding than freeride. The difference in approach stems from a different mind set. Freestyle snowboarding comes from a slightly more aggressive, more "look at what I'm doing" mind set.

I'm not saying the goal of freestyle is to show off, or have everyone watching, it is more like a standard by which you try and hold your riding to. Let me explain, freeride you go with what the mountain offers, it's cool and fun, freestyle you create something(a trick) with the mountain and make it look good enough for others to notice. Riding with friends is great because you get to see what their doing and that will push you to do something just as good if not better.

Freestyle consists of riding all kinds of things from rails, jumps, park, jibs...all things. Here is how a freestyle snowboarder would approach a run. Imagine being at the top of a run. It is a pretty wide open run and no one is around. To the right is a snow bank, a bit below that is a fallen tree and further below that is a jump.

A freestyle rider would see the bank and maybe do a 360 nose butter or depending on how firm the top part of the bank is do a board slid across it. Then they would hit the fallen tree like a rail doing some type of board slid to 50/50 to 180 off, then hit the jump and do some spinning with maybe some grabs thrown in. The most common board used for freestyle riding is a twin tip snowboard. This is not to say that you can't go freestyling with a directional snowboard, it is just better with a twin tip. The evenness of both the tail and nose make switchstance snowboarding easier. Riding switch is very common in freestyle. Freestyle is my favorite snowboarding style.

It is tons of fun, especially when you are riding with a group of friends. Everyone is just cruse'n the mountain doing all their tricks, pushing each other to ride better. Go freestyling!!!
