How to Ride Moguls
on a Snowboard
Learning how to ride moguls is something that every snowboarder should do. I've heard a lot of riders say that moguls are not for snowboarders or that they hate doing them so they never do. That is the wrong attitude. First of all being able to ride moguls just makes riding on a regular run that much easier. Plus snowboarding moguls will improve your tree riding.
Here are some snowboarding techniques on how to ride moguls:
- Snowboarding moguls is really no different than making a bunch of really quick turns. After all moguls are made from piles of snow building up from people making turns in the same place. The snow just keeps piling up until a large mound of snow has formed. Practice making quick turns on a regular run first. Go from heel edge turn to toe edge turn quickly and this will help program mogul riding into your subconscious body movements.
- Looking ahead and mapping out your path to the bottom is the best snowboard tip for riding moguls. Just stand at the top of the mogul run and look at all the lines you could take and where each one would take you. Find your starting point and visualize yourself making every turn to get you to the bottom.
- Another good snowboard tip for riding moguls is finding the right moguls to learn on. Try and find moguls that are not so deep in-between each other and that are more rounded on the top and not so pointy. You wanna find moguls that aren't so developed yet because they will be easier to learn on.
- After you have decided on your line drop in slowly, don't rush it. Approach each mogul like it is just a turn and not a mogul. Remember that moguls are formed just because of excess turning in the same spot, so really your just following someone else's track and not riding moguls.
- Riding steeper more pointier moguls will be more difficult for a beginner. The trick to riding these are that you try and bounce almost from one to another, you make your turn in the air. For a beginner try to avoid these at first, but if you do come across them just slow down and try to absorb each mogul by bending your knees little extra.
Learning how to ride moguls on a snowboard just takes practice. Follow the above snowboarding techniques and you should have no problem with riding moguls. Definitely don't limit yourself and NOT snowboard moguls because you think your not ready. If you can ride down a mountain strapped to a piece of plastic than you can ride moguls. Take your time, practice makes perfect, and have FUN.
