Rocker snowboards or other wise called reverse camber snowboards...are the newest craze in snowboard design. It all started in 2008 when Lib Tech put out the Skate Banana and K2 put out the Gyrator. With the huge success with reverse camber other companies took note and put out their own version of reverse camber snowboard (aka rocker snowboards). But don't get confused, this "newest" craze is really just an old design from the early days of snowboarding that has resurfaced. Rocker snowboards ride very loose and give you a hang-up free feel. They are great if you are into jibbing. Reverse camber snowboards are also great for riding powder because the ends of the snowboard are already pulled upward allowing the nose to naturally give lift to your riding. If you are into riding pipe or slopestyle than a rocker snowboard might not be what you want. The profile of a reverse camber (rocker) snowboard automatically gives up stiffness, pop, and support, all of which are things you will want in a board if you are going to master the pipe and the big jumps in the park. As of right now there are three different kinds of reverse camber snowboards being made. The first is kinking the board in the middle, which is how Mervin Manufactors (lib tech and gnu) and Never Summer make their boards. Having an upward bend between the bindings keeps the board loose, but also stays flat to the ground while riding, because of your body weight. If you do want a rocker board and your into riding the park, this is the kind you should get. Also since your weight keeps the board flat to the snow, it gives you a full length of edge contact which makes this kind of reverse camber great for riding hard pack. The second kind of reverse camber (rocker) snowboards is by starting the upward kink just outside the binding inserts. This is how K2, Capita, Signal and Burton make their rocker boards. This kind of rocker is perfect for riding powder because the tips are lifted off the snow. They are also great for jibbing because there is a shorter contact length which makes it easier to butter or spin. The third kind of reverse camber is the full length rocker. A full length rocker means there are no flat points on the board. These boards are extremely buttery and are great for jibbing and for just having fun. Ride and Stepchild make their rocker boards with this method. Right now rocker snowboards are just starting to become popular. They are a lot of fun to ride, but not everyone will enjoy them. It's recommended that you at-least demo one to see if you like it. It definitely will make for a very fun day on the hill. It is a different take on snowboarding. It almost takes the effot out of snowboarding. Directional Snowboards and Twin Tip Snowboards can both be made with rocker. So there really is no limit to what can happen with this new way of making boards. Make sure to check one out, demo one, barrow one from a friend, ask around and find out what other people are saying about it.
