Snowboard Base Repair
Tools Needed for Snowboard Base Repair: Clear or Black Repair Candles (p-tex), Lighter, Candle or Propane Torch, & Metal Scraper & Epoxy, but only if your hole has left the edge exposed.
Snowboards are born to be abused- airs, rails, logs, rocks and just different snow conditions will mess up your board. Scratches and holes make your base slower and make the board not as smooth as it should be. You should always do a snowboard base repair on these problems, it will make you ride better and it will prolong the life of your board.
There's a bunch of ways to fix bases. A professional tuner would run the board through a grinding machine first and eliminate most of the little scratches. Since you don't have one you definitely don't want to cover every scratch.
You have to clean the base repair section to remove the dirt, wax, or any other thing you might have on your board. Use a Base Cleaner (refer to Checking Your Board for more information about Base Cleaner).
Next you need to grab p-tex and melt it with your lighter, using the blue part of the flame will give you a smooth burn. When it starts dripping, use a metal scraper underneath so you don't make a mess, then drip p-tex into the hole. If the base of your board is white than you should use clear p-tex, and if you are using clear p-tex you should keep the p-tex spinning in your hand the whole time it is dripping.
This will help eliminate getting carbon (the black stuff) in your base repair.Remember to use the metal scraper to catch the dripping p-tex while you get to the next scratch or hole.
Sometimes bigger holes will need extra p-tex and you may have to use your metal scrapper to push down on to it, this will make it cool down faster and spread the p-tex evenly in the holes.
When things are cool to the touch scrape the excess material away by holding the scraper with both hands and putting both thumbs behind it and pushing forward, away from your body. This will give you more stability and manageability with the metal scrapper.
Some snowboard base repairs are better left to a professional. Big holes to the core require a baseweld and I recommend you take it to a professional. Filling the hole will be easy but removing the extra material will require a pansar file and then a machine sanding. Depending on the size of the hole you may have to get a new structure put on the board(to learn more about board structureand its importance I recommend checking out my e-book Snowboard Tune Guide
Board Structure is the pattern that is on the base of your board. If you look closely you will see little xx or // all over. These structures is how your board removes the water that is created from the friction of your board and the snow. A smooth structure is for cold snow and a course structure is for wet snow.
Gouges or holes where you can see your edge needs to be repaired usingepoxy. Fill in the hole, but try not to fill it in all the way. Let it harden. Once it is hard follow the same procedure as mentioned above for using p-tex. If it is a really tiny hole and you fill it all the way in with epoxy, it's o.k. just make sure to sand it down flat with some sand paper.
Now you are ready for giving your snowboard some edges.
