Snowboard Butt Pads
Wear snowboard butt pads if you are just learning how to snowboard or are thrown down in the park.
OK so I know the butt is made mostly of fat, but that doesn't make falling on it any easier, especially repeated falling. You know it's bad when it starts to sting. Also you don't want to bruise your tailbone because that could take months to heal.
When deciding on snowboard butt pads you either can go with pads that focus more on comfort or protection. The crash/impact shorts are like surf-trunks with armor. Very comfortable, but not as protective as the padded shorts. Padded shorts look similar to what football players wear. They are tight to the skin with bigger pads and offer excellent protection.
Either way you go you are protecting yourself. Just think about what you will be doing with your pads. If you are planning on hitting some big jumps or some crazy kink rail you should probably get the padded shorts. But if you are just learning to snowboard you are probably better off getting the crash/impact shorts. You don't want to ruin your vacation because of an injury, wear your pads.
Snowboard Butt Pads for Beginners
If are a beginner you are going to be falling a lot and most of the time you will fall on your butt. There is no way to avoid it, it is just part of learning to snowboard. I've had the pleasure to test out two of the more popular snowboard butt pads designed for beginners. The BUTTSHIELD and TailSaver.
Before I begin with the review between these products I want to stress that I am in no way affiliated with either product and do not stand to benefit in any way from this review.
Buttshield Review
The Buttshield is like a really big, foam pad. It helps absorb an impact by about 30%-40%. The price isn't too bad, it sells for $25. When I put it on I had troubles getting it to fit inside my snowboard pants, which is odd because I wear baggy pants. It was a litle uncomfortable to wear, but the positive aspect of the buttshield is that it covers your whole butt. I would rate this product 5 out of 10.
TailSaver Review
The TailSaver is a smaller, lighter product that covers less area but absorbes much more impact, probably around 80%(there is a picture below). It sells for $20. It was extremely easy to put on and wear. Since it is a smaller product you hardly know that you are wearing it and unlike the buttshield nobody else knows you are wearing it either. It keeps your tailbone protected which when you fall on your butt it is your tailbone that suffers and not really your butt cheeks. I would rate this product 9 out of 10.
