Snowboarding Stance

Snowboarding Stance

So you just got your new snowboard and new bindings, so how do you put them together? The key here is to make sure you measure the right stance for your riding style.

The first step is learning how to measure your snowboarding stance. You need a tape measure. There are three measurements you need to take to get the stance that will fit you best. By taking these measurements you will start to learn which ones you like and don't like and therefore you can start to fine tune your snowboarding stance. The first measurement is from your front binding to the nose of the board. Then measurement from the back binding to the tail. The final measurement is the distance between your front and back bindings. These measurements will affect how the board rides. Make sure to measure these distances from the same place. For example, always measure distances starting from the center of your binding's base plate. Below are some standard snowboard stances, which one describes you best???

Beginner Snowboarding Stance:

When you are just learning how to snowboard having too much nose and not enough tail can make turning harder. It is better to have a more centered snowboarding stance. Set up your bindings so that the distance between your front binding and nose is equal to the distance between your back binding and tail. This will make turning a lot easier.

Freestyle/Jibbing Snowboarding Stance:

If you are into doing jib's around the mountain or elsewhere you will probably like a centered snowboarding stance. You want to have the same distance between your front binding and nose as with your back binding and tail. This is will make riding switch/fakie easier.

Freeride/Powder Snowboarding Stance:

freeride and powder stance is about having a longer distance between your front binding and nose than the distance between your back binding and tail. The extra length in the nose gives the board the ability to rise above powder better, otherwise you could bury your nose and do a front flip.Having a longer nose will make your turns more drawn out.

How to measure your snowboard stance

The best way to do this is by laying your snowboard flat on the ground. Then place your front binding in the center of the front holes and place your back binding in the center of the back holes. So if you want a longer nose for freeride or powder riding measure your bindings out so you have a longer nose and shorter tail. For a beginner or freestyle/jib rider place your bindings so you have an even or close to even amount of nose and tail (NOTE: never have more tail than nose, only more nose).

Don't forget to measure the distance between the front and back binding. This is very important because if it is too narrow or too wide it will affect your ability to ride. Your bindings should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart.

If things look good then you are ready to figure out your binding angles, screw your bindings to the board and start riding.
