Snowboarding Season

Great deals at The House

I love snowboarding season. For me in the northern hemisphere snowboarding season begins in mid November and last till mid-late April. My home mountain is Vail, Co, but there are a few other mountais around like A-basin and Loveland that open sooner and close later. In fact A-basin has stayed open until July 4 in the past. Less than half of the mountain is open for riding, but it is still a lot of fun to be snowboarding summer.

Snowboarding season is broken into 3 separate seasons, early-season, main-season, and spring.

Early-Snowboarding Season

The early season can begin anytime around October and November and last until late December. Snowboarding at this time is a lot of fun because it's the first time we get to ride a mountain in 6 months...But it also is a little scary because there are more hazards to be aware of. Firstly, the snow coverage is very thin, which means rocks, logs, and grass can damage your board or cause you to injure yourself. The second hazard is a lot of people aren't physically ready for snowboarding season and you will see people wipeout right in front of you. Be careful, check out our snowboarding training so you can stay in top snowboarding shape all summer long.

Main-Snowboarding Season

The main season is late December till mid-March. This is winter snowboarding, the time of year when 2 foot powder days are not uncommon. I especially love this time of the snowbard season because by now your in a regular routine of riding everyday, exploring the mountain, finding secret stashs of snow. It's the best. There isn't too much to worry about with this time of year because most hazards are burried in deep.

Spring-Snowboarding Season

The spring season runs from mid-late March through April. O.K. I know I already said I love the mian snowboarding season, but I have to say it again for the spring season. It's crazy to even say it, but all season long I'm always waiting for spring riding to hurry up and arrive . I think the reason why is because the weather is really nice and warm and you don't have to wear so much clothes. The sky is always sunny and blue and the snow gets really soft. The snow during spring time is perfect for jibbing around, even better, the snow will soften up so much it is like riding in powder, because the snow will be soft up to a foot or more deep.

The one thing to be careful about is riding too early in the morning. Since the snow gets so wet during the day , it re-freezes over night and creates really dangerous riding conditions until mid-late morning, when the snow softens up again. Another thing about sprint time is you don't want to count out pwoder days because you can still get dumped on. The end of the 2008 snowboarding season in Vail was great, the mountain closed mid-April and it dumped almost everyday of the last two weeks. Two days before the mountain cloaed it snowed two feet. YEA!!!!

The snowboarding season doesn't have to end with the closure of the mountain anymore. Now there is this new stuff called SnowGel. You mix it together with water and snow forms. Then you put it on top of some carpet and you can ride down and hit a jump or rail. I like it a lot, I think it works really good. It's pretty cheap and can last up weeks if properly stored. There are other ways to keep snowboarding summer, like traveling to the opposite hemisphere or riding at Mt. Hood or whistler.
