Snowboard leashes use to be long and you could carry the board on your shoulder with it, you attached them to your leg and the binding, so in case anything happens you don't have a runaway board, now days they are small, 4 inches long and they attach to your boot laces and your binding.
Some resorts still require them , so it's good to keep one around.
