Snowboard Terms 

Ok to understand snowboarding you have to learn a few snowboard terms that are crucial slang of the sport. We have made a dictionary of terms, tricks and slang. Hope you guys find it useful and brings a smile to your face.

Snowboard Terms:

Backside-The backside is where your heels sit. Your backside is the side to which your back faces.

Blindside- Landing or rotating blind, not being able to see your landing.


Bone
- Straightening one or both legs during a trick


BoarderCross
- Snowboarders race through turns and jumps. 4-6 riders at the same time.


Bonk
-To hit an object with your snowboard, bounce off of it and keep riding


Boost
-To get air after jumping jump.


Booter
- Jump


Butter
- A trick done by flexing on either the nose or tail of your board.


Bust
- To do


Bullet Proof
- super hard snow, almost ice


Cant
-The angle at which either foot points


Camber
- The space beneath the center of a snowboard and the floor when it lays flat on it.


Centered stance
- Distance between the nose and the front binding is the same as that between the tail and the rear binding.


Corduroy
- A word to describe the snow condition after snowcat grooming. Looks like corduroy.


C-Rail
- A rail shaped like a the letter C.


Cruisin'
- To chill, chillin'


Chillin'
- To relax


Delaminate- Separation of snowboard layers. A very bad thing.


Directional stance
- Distance between the nose and front binding is longer than the distance between the tail and the rear binding.


Duckfooted
- Your bindings are set so toes point out.

Effective edge- The edge that makes contact with the snow while making turns


Fakie
- Riding with your usual back leg in the front.


Flat bottom
- Bottom of halfpipe, space between the walls.


Fall line
- The path that takes you most directly downwards on a slope.


Flex
- Stiffness of your board.


Forward Lean
- The degree to which the highbacks keep your ankles and calves bent over your toes.


Freeriding
- Snowboarding all over the place, Not including the park.


Freestyle snowboarding- Any riding that incorporates tricks.


Frontside- The frontside is where your toes sit. Frontside tricks are any tricks that you rotate where your face faces, this also makes where your face faces your frontside.


Frostbite - Don't want to get this. Skin or bodyparts freeze and die.


FrostNip
- Before Frostbite, skin turns white, later gets swollen, red and peels.


Goofy foot
-Riding with right foot forward


Grab
- To grab a snowboard edge with one or both hands during a trick.


Jibtastic
- cool, amazing


Hip

Halfpipe
- Two snow ramps that face each other, shape like the letter U.


Hard boots
- Made with hard plastic and are very stiff. They are used for carving and racing.


Heel Drag
- If bindings are not set correctly they can make your heel overhang causing problems when making turns.


Heel edge
- Edge where the heels sits.


Heelside turn- A turn made with your heel edge.


Highback- Part of the binding that supports the ankle and calf while making heelside turns.


Hypothermia
- body temperature drops below normal, very dangerous.


Jib
- a cool small trick


Kink
- a bend in a rail


Killer
- Amazing


Lip
- The top of the halfpipe wall.


Log Slide
- A rail made out of a tree, could be natural or man made.


Nose
- The front end of your snowboard.


Nollie
- To jump by popping off of your nose. Just like skateboarding.


Ollie
- To jump by popping off of your tail. Just like skateboarding.


Pipe Dragon
-Machine used to groom the halfpipe.


Poo Stance
-You look like your taking a poop because you stick your butt out when you bend your knees. Don't do it


Poach
- To ride where you are not supposed to be riding. Usually out of bounds powder lines.


Poser or Hack
- Someone that acts and dresses the part of something they are not.


Poptart
- Airing from fakie to forward in the halfpipewithout rotation.


Powder
- Light, fluffy, fresh snow.


Quarterpipe
- One wall of the half pipe.


Rodeo
- backflip with a spin.


Rail
- Metal structure that resembles a hand rail.


Railing- To make hard and fast turns while riding.


Regular foot- Riding with the left foot forward.


Rocker
- The opposite of camber, so when the snowboard is placed on a flat surface, it rests only on the center portion.


Roll down the windows- when you loose balance in the air and you move your arms as if you where rolling down the windows in an old car.


Rollout deck
- Part of the halfpipe wall that serves as a walkway to the top end.


Running length
- Part of bottom of board that comes in contact with the snow.


Session
- Another name for a period of riding time, where you focus on specific tricks or terrain.


Skating- When you keep your front foot strapped in and kick along with your back foot.


SlopeStyle Competition- Event where riders are judged on jumps and rails only.


Soft boots
- Boots used for freestyle and freeride snowboarding.


Speed check
- To slow yourself down before a jump or when you don't feel comfortable with your speed.


Stance
- How your bindings are set, angles, direction and distance between them


Step-in binding
- Binding where you are able to just push down onto it and you are securely lashed in, highback optional, they do require special boots.


Stomp pad
- A pad that gives you traction while your back foot is unstrapped, usually used when getting off the lift.


S-Rail
- Rail shaped like the letter S if looked form above.


Sick
- Amazing, cool


Slush
- Wet snow, usually in spring.


Tail- The end of your board.


Toe edge- The edge where your toes sit.

Toeside turn
- Turn made on toeside edge.


Tranny
- The transition, the curve of the bottom part of the halfpipe wall.


Traverse- To ride across the fall line of a slope.


Twin tip
- Snowboard with nose and tail exactly the same shape


Tight- Not used as much but it means smooth.


Vert
- The topmost part of the walls of a halfpipe.


Wall
- The sections that face each other in the halfpipe. A halfpipe wall has transition, vert and a lip.
